Why is my Google Business Profile not showing up in search? 6 causes and fixes

A Google Business Profile usually doesn't show up in search because it isn't a strong enough match for the search (relevance), the searcher is outside your area (distance), or other businesses have more reviews and links (prominence). Google says local results are mainly based on those three things, so check each one in turn.

Is it missing, or just not ranking?

Search your exact business name and town. If your profile appears, it's live, and the problem is ranking for searches like "plumber near me". If it doesn't appear at all, check verification, suspension and duplicates first. Our post on why your business isn't showing on Google Maps covers those.

1. Your primary category is off

Google asks businesses to choose categories that complete the sentence "This business IS a", as specific as possible. A roofer listed as "Construction company" is competing on the wrong searches.

2. Your profile is thin

Google says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up. Fill in services, hours, description and photos.

3. Your service area doesn't cover the search

Distance is one of the three main factors. If you're testing from a town that's outside your service areas, you may not appear there.

4. Your website doesn't back up your profile

Google says it can also detect category information from your website and from mentions about your business throughout the web. A website that clearly covers your services and towns supports your profile.

5. Fewer reviews than competitors

Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. Ask every happy customer using a Google link or QR code.

6. Few or no local links

Prominence also takes in how many websites link to your business. Genuine local links help; bought ones are link spam and can do harm.

How to test properly

Testing from your own phone at home can be misleading. Distance is one of Google's main local factors, and Google says that if a customer doesn't share their location, it uses what it knows about their location. Try searching from the towns you want work in, or ask a customer or friend there to search for you. Search for the job, not your name, for example "emergency electrician" or "roof repair", because that's what new customers type.

Keep a simple note each month of which searches show you and where. It's the easiest way to see whether changes are working.

Fix in this order

  1. Category and services (an afternoon).
  2. Service areas (minutes, but allow up to 48 hours to show).
  3. Website pages for your main jobs and towns.
  4. A review habit after every job.
  5. Genuine local links, month by month.

The first two are quick. Steps 3 to 5 are where a managed service saves you the most time.
